About This Spot

Stepping into La Mer Rouge, nestled quietly on Mardol in Shrewsbury, you immediately sense a gentle buzz—a calm energy that invites you to slow down and settle in. This isn’t a place that rushes its guests; instead, it offers a feeling much like meeting an old friend for a memorable meal, where time softens and the outside world gently fades away. The space reflects a refined warmth, with touches that speak to the sea’s essence without pretense, making it both approachable and distinctive.

The rhythm here is unhurried yet attentive. The staff strike a comfortable balance between professionalism and genuine friendliness, creating an atmosphere that feels both special and relaxed. There’s a distinct pleasure in watching the interplay of host, chef, and mixologist—each adding little flourishes that make your visit feel thoughtfully crafted but never staged.

At the heart of La Mer Rouge is a menu that whispers stories of the ocean’s bounty, coaxing you to explore flavors layered with care. Whether it’s the delicate sweetness of scallops paired with earthy hints of black pudding or the satisfying richness of a perfectly seasoned seafood linguine, each plate carries a sense of place and a reassurance of quality. The offerings invite sharing and discovery—complimentary flatbreads and dips begin the meal like a welcoming handshake, setting the tone for what’s ahead.

No matter if you arrive craving hearty staples like a 10oz sirloin or elegant seafood curries, there’s a warmth in every dish that feels steeped in experience. Desserts—like a generous chocolate brownie or the fragrant sweetness of baklava—round out the meal with familiar comforts given a thoughtful touch.

La Mer Rouge is, by all accounts, a quietly confident local treasure. It’s the kind of spot where repeat visits feel like catching up with a trusted companion, and where newcomers are swiftly made to feel at home. The attentive service, combined with honest food that celebrates its ingredients, creates a human-centered experience that lingers long after your last bite.

A hidden gem in plain sight. My wife and I booked this wonderful seafood restaurant. I'd eaten there before with friends and wanted to show the experience, which did not disappoint. Sam was a great host, kept us smiling, and was very welcoming. The mixologist did, too, and she was incredible (photos below) with her mixers. Chef made an appearance and is always a delight to speak to. The table was decorated beautifully, with flowers, as I mentioned when booking how little we get to go out together. (Without the kids) The starters were stunning, the mains to die for, and I couldn't even manage a dessert (and I'm a big lad, but the wine helped). Overall rating of 5 stars as it never disappoints, and if you've never been here before, you are missing out. ⭐ Personally, I would suggest booking before the first Michelin star arrives (no joke) Thanks to all at La Mer Rouge for making a rare intimate night out one of the very best it could be (and yes, we are coming back )

Visited for the 4th time last Saturday and was not disappointed. The food is always good here, especially the fish, the service is welcoming and efficient and the desserts made us smile.

What a lovely restaurant! Enjoyed a delicious seafood chowder for a birthday treat, the sauce was incredible. My husband doesn’t eat fish but was really happy with his chicken shish (which was a huge portion). The service couldn’t have been more friendly and accommodating. Will definitely return if we head this way again.

We visited on the 10th of September in the evening, the young waitress who served us was an absolute star. She was so polite, helpful and worked hard serving multiple tables all by herself. The food was absolutely gorgeous. Both my partner and I had the scallop starter, which we finished very quickly - they barely touched the table! I then had the pappardelle and he had the bass as our mains. It was truly stunning, and we would recommend to anyone visiting the Shrewsbury/Telford area. Thank you so much!

Over a month ago since we ate there (4 adults) and only getting round to reviewing now. The food was soo good and tasty. Nice options that I have not seen in other restaurants so was nice to try something different. It is decorated really well. The chef has good experience in cooking and the service was amazing. Lovely lady who will explain the menu really well. I highly recommend and if we return to Shrewsbury this will be the first stop thank you team La Mer Rouge!

We haven’t even left this place yet and I feel compelled to write this. The food here is beyond words! The chef is an artist! The welcome from Sam is warm, friendly and so genuine you want him to join you at your table. We had three course as part of their deal and I don’t know how they do it. The monkfish was delicious, which is just as well because it had some serious work to do to beat the scallop starter and the baklava! What can I say. We live in Bristol, over 2.5 hours away and we’re already trying to work out another reason to eat here. Don’t miss this place - we’ll be back.

Really delicious food in generous portion. We ordered seafood paradedelle (pasta), marinated sea bream with fried calamari and ragout potatoes, and kid’s chicken with rice. We will definitely come back again! :)

Booked an early evening dinner for 8 of us on a Saturday evening. Good communication on booking and the chef asked us 2 select in advance which we were happy 2 do. We had a friendly greeting from Willow on arrival who then did a great job of serving us throughout the dinner - always with a smile. Every dish came out perfectly done. The calves liver was excellent. The fish mains were great as was the chicken - also huge portions on that especially. The menu is extensive so will be back 2 try other dishes.
